  2. supremacy, founded 1866 in the southern
  3. states of the USA to oppose Reconstruction
  4. after the Civil War and to deny political
  5. rights to the black population. Members wore
  6. hooded white robes to hide their identity,
  7. and burned crosses as a rite of intimidation.
  8. It was as active in the 1960s in terrorizing
  9. civil-rights activists and organizing racist
  10. demonstrations. Its violence led the
  11. government to pass the restrictive Ku Klux
  12. Klan Acts of 1871. The society re-emerged in
  13. 1915 in Atlanta, Georgia, and increased in
  14. strength during the 1920s as a racist,
  15. anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, and
  16. anti-Communist organization.
